Litchfield Council is looking for a practical, level-headed Ranger to join its Regulatory Services team.

You don't need years of local government or ranger experience to be considered. At this level, we can teach you the legislation, systems and regulatory processes. What we can't teach as easily is the ability to stay calm when someone is upset, communicate clearly when the message may not be welcome and treat every person fairly.

The role

As a Ranger, you'll administer and enforce Council's Dog Management By-laws and other relevant legislation across the Litchfield Municipality.

You'll respond to complaints, investigate what has occurred and determine the appropriate next step. Sometimes that means educating an owner or resolving an issue through conversation. At other times, it may involve issuing a warning or infringement notice.

The work combines time in the community with investigations, records, correspondence and follow-up. You'll need to be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities and making balanced decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.

Your work will include:

• Investigating complaints and speaking with owners, witnesses and community members
• Capturing, controlling, transporting and microchipping dogs
• Conducting patrols and inspections
• Preparing correspondence, warnings, infringements and reports
• Maintaining accurate records and supporting pound operations

The position may also involve trapping and euthanising animals when required. You must understand and be willing to undertake this responsibility with appropriate training.

About you

You may come from animal management, local government, compliance, security, investigations or a customer service role involving complaints and conflict.

More importantly, you'll bring:

• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Confidence dealing with difficult or emotional situations
• Sound judgement and a calm, respectful approach
• Confidence around dogs and a willingness to learn animal-handling techniques
• Good computer, written communication and recordkeeping skills
• You must also be physically able to work across varied surfaces and lift dogs weighing up to 20kg.

A Working with Children Clearance will be required within one month of commencing. You must also be willing to obtain a firearms licence if required and complete a pre-employment medical and National Police Clearance.
